Fly Tying For Fun And Sport

For most of us, fly fishing is as much an art as a sport -- and fly tying is an integral part of it. We take as much pride in our fly fishing ties as in the fish we catch. In their way, flies are just as important as rods or casting technique; after all, it's the fly the fish goes for. Mastering intricate fly tying knots and creating gorgeous flies has its own level of satisfaction; and the best part is, when you're done with tying your ties, you can take that jewel-like fly out on the water and turn it loose on the fish.

What's in your tying kit?

Any fisherman who ties their own flies has their own fly tying kit, and what's inside yours is an individual as your fingerprints. It all depends on your preferences, of course, and fish you're after. If you're after trout, there may be nymphs, dry flies, and plenty of tying materials fit for making those items. If you're looking to catch saltwater fish, you'll go for different materials that let you tie bigger-eyed, flashier flies than your average rainbow might go for.

Other goodies

If you're planning to tie your own flies, you'll need more than just hooks, hair, and thread. Among other things, you'll need a nice fly tying vice that will hold your nascent fly just so, as well as the appropriate surface to tie flies on. A specialized bench or table is ideal for your ties, and many come complete with special attachments to hold your vices, and cubbyholes for your materials. And don't forget your techniques and knots -- you can buy diagrams and patterns from plenty of places, and we've got the best of them right here!
