Patterns 101: Using Fly Tying Patterns As their name suggests, fly tying patterns are patterns that help you learn how to tie specific types of flies. A fly tying pattern is usually a simple set of line drawings or descriptive text with photos showing you exactly the materials to use and the fly tying knots you'll need to use to put them together. When you get together your tinsel, threads, hackles, feathers, and fur, don't forget a pattern. It'll make the job of tying your fly a lot easier. Fly ties for one and all Tying flies is a true art. Learning your basic fly knots and tying patterns can be surprisingly difficult, so it's best to have a handy "how to" guide when you hit the rough spots. The tiny size of the flies makes it doubly hard for many of us, but with the appropriate pattern and the proper tools, your ties can be as lovely as a professional's. Where to get 'em There are plenty of sites on the Internet eager to offer you fly patterns in the thousands. Caddis flies, stone flies, nymphs, emergers, even specialty flies like bass flies -- they're all out there. There are many books that are simply filled with hundreds of patterns, often specific to region. One such is Randy Seltzer's "Flies, The Best 1,000." In some cases, you might be able to find patterns for free on specialty sites. Whatever the case, when you've picked out your favorite pattern, be sure you have plenty of materials on hand to experiment with. Our favorite merchants can help you find the perfect elk hair, exotic feather, or specialty thread you'll need to get it all together. Authors, submit an article! Webmasters share this site!
