In Praise Of Fly Rods Fly rods are emblematic of the sport of flyfishing. Indeed, fly fishing rods are the core items of fly fishing equipment that have barely changed in more than twenty centuries of people casting flies to trout, from the ancient world right up til today. Sure, most are made of more advanced materials nowadays, but the hallmarks of a good rod remain low weight, durability, and flexibility. Fly fishermen put great thought into the rods they flip their flies with; fortunately, there's a fly rod or two (or ten) out there for every conceivable need, and just about every budget. What to look for in a fly rod For some of us, a fly rod is just fine if it gets the flies out to the fish effectively. Others prefer rods with plenty of extras and doodads to enhance their fly fishing experience. Wherever you fall on this spectrum, just keep in mind the basics of weight, flexibility, and durability. You'll also need to consider your fishing needs and, sadly, your budget. A savvy fisherman, however, can stay within these constraints and still come out with a decent rod, perhaps even one to be proud of. If you're into true flyfishing authenticity and have plenty of green, you might consider a genuine split bamboo rod. Bamboo is the best natural material for fly rods, and a beautiful, lacquered bamboo rod can last many decades, given the right maintenance and care. How much should you pay? Sage. Cabela. LL Bean. Orvis. Thomas & Thomas. Redington. There are dozens of makers of great flyfishing rods out there, and you can be proud to own any of their products. Why it comes down to it, however, you have to consider how much you're willing to spend (or to save up for). A decent graphite composite rod can be had for as little as $89 dollars, possibly even less. The upper limit, especially on the best split bamboo fishing rods, is in the thousands. Only you can decide how much is enough, but we're here to help light the way! Check our merchants for a galaxy of fine flyfishing rods, all available from the links on this page.
