Fly Fishing Rods: An Endless Variety When most people think of fly fishing, what do they think of first? Fly fishing rods, of course! No matter how good your tackle and flies are, they're nothing if you don't have a decent fly fishing rod to present them to the fish with. A good fly rod is the core around which all else is built when it comes to fly fishing gear and equipment. If you don't start out with a good rod, you might as well be fishing with a cane pole. Getting your flies to the fish While other forms of fishing are great fun, fly fishing is an art -- and performing great art requires great tools. If you don't have a good rod when you step into the river or stream, you might as well pack up and go home, well-tied flies or not. You need a sturdy rod, one that's well-made, light, flawless, and durable. It should also be sleek, light, and limber. Your rod needn't be made of carefully manicured split bamboo, but it does need to be able to keep up with you and bring in the hardiest fish. So you don't want to head for your local discount center to pick up a made-in-China cheapie. Go into a specialty store for your rods and fly fishing equipment. A few of the better brands Brand and style is, of course, a matter of personal choice and opinion, but we'd be remiss if we didn't point out a few of the best-known brands. Redington, for example, makes a wide variety of fly fishing rods, in spey, two-piece, and four piece models; and of course, Orvis has plenty of similar rods to choose from. Sage fly rods are also highly regarded, as are those from Thomas & Thomas, LL Bean, Cabela, and many others. Most of these are good, solid rods that are sensitive enough to let you feel every flick of your flies and every twist and turn a fish makes. They can vary in price from less than $100 to more than a $1000. Of course, the rod (or rods!) you choose will depend on your budget and needs, but there should be plenty of leeway in the selection for you whatever those needs may be.
