Getting The Fly Fishing In Alaska Experience!

Alaska can be considered to be an elite location among anglers throughout the USA. While many other locations throughout the USA are quite popular, Alaskan fishing vacations are considered the best. Think of Alaskan fly fishing and immediately your mind goes to Salmon, Pike, Steelhead and Arctic Char. Plenty of fish, relaxing surroundings and beautiful scenery are characteristic of fly fishing in Alaska.

Choosing the Perfect Place to Fish

Before you plan a lovely week of flyfishing in Alaska, you need to choose the perfect location for fishing vacations. You should check out a variety of fishing guides and maps to find locations where your kind of fishing is available. After all, it wouldn't make sense to go Pike fishing where there are no ice-covered lakes. When you get to Alaska, you'll find not only places where you can rough it out, but also lodges where you can stay in luxury, places which provide you with guides to help you with your fishing, and places where you can just find fellow enthusiasts for fly fishing. It is your choice. After all, while a lodge is a good alternative, there is something primeval and exciting about doing it all yourself that a lodge cannot give you.

Getting there

The first thing to do, of course, is to get you geared up and loaded for the fishing experience. Before the start of your vacation, you should go down to a good supply shop and get all the equipment you need. A short checklist of your requirements is:

  • Reels
  • Rods
  • Flies (depending on where you’re fishing)
  • Tackles
  • Sunglasses (protection from the light reflecting off ice and water)
  • Wading gear
  • Bag (to hold your equipment)
  • Rain jacket

These are some of the most important supplies, but you should adjust your shopping according to your needs. You also need some protective gear, as the Alaskan weather is notorious, although if you're staying in a lodge, this might not be as important.

But once you're stocked up and well informed, there's almost nothing to it. The only thing left is to go there. And once you go there, there is absolutely no other pleasure anywhere near it. You'll be spending days and days of immense fun fishing with dry flies or wet flies, reeling in the fish or sitting quietly on the banks of the stream or wading in. If there was ever a perfect fly fishing destination in the USA, Alaska is it.
