Fly Fishing Basics: Getting Into The Game While fly fishing is a sport, it's one that just about anyone can get into. All you really need for basic fly fishing is the willingness to purchase the necessary supplies, gear, and equipment, and then to wade right in and work hard on some basic skills. Once you've started with the basics, it won't be long before your dedication pays off with tangible benefits: lively fish struggling at the end of your line. It's all about the casting When it comes right down to it, fly fishing is about learning to get your flies out to where the fish can see them with a minimum of fuss. This means you need to learn good, basic casting techniques first. Fortunately, there are plenty of 'how to' sources out there to help you get started. Not only can you find lots of books to guide you, many Internet sites will provide you with diagrams and photographs showing you casting methods to help you put the flies where they need to go. You can even take basic fly-casting courses at tackle shops or specialty schools to learn the basic 'how tos' of your new sport. Knots and stuff Fly fishing techniques aside, you'll also need to know how to do a few other important things in order to fish effectively. Educate yourself on your equipment first, so you understand which lines are best for which reels, how to choose your tackle, what the various equipment does, and how to go about outfitting yourself. Basic fly fishing knots will help you learn how to put line onto your reel, splice backing line to your fly line, tie loops, and attach your flies to your line. Other important fly fishing basics you can learn include fish identification, basics of hook removal, insect identification (so you know which flies to use), the best all around flies...the lis goes on.
